Correct is Not Impressive

Thursday, March 31, 2005

After sitting through a demo meeting on some business software today, I found myself a bit bewildered, but mostly saddened when I came to a realization: most software is so lacking that when things are actually done The Right Way™, they are sold as incredible features.

It is not amazing that your software interface is completely template-driven; that is expected. It is not incredible that you provide redundancy and failover capabilities; that is just common sense. It is not remarkable that you were able to actually create a mostly coherent object model for manipulation of your software; that is just good programming sense. It is not impressive that your software makes it easier for people to get their jobs done; that is the whole point!

Please put an end to this flashy wave of insipid features.

Any company which touts those types of things (the expected) needs to fire their marketing department and start over by asking what the customer wants. Then, exceed the expectations.

Companies like that are industrial thinking – if we build it, they will come.
