Street Signs!

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

If there’s one thing that is completely stupid and driving me absolutely insane here, it’s the horrible street signs (or the lack thereof). Coming from Southern California where street signs are in abundance and are sufficiently large in most cases, I am completely baffled by the street sign practices up here.

First off, on 90% of the streets downtown there are only the flag-style street signs; you know, those tiny ones that are about 3″x8″. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they only put the signs on one of the four light posts at any given intersection. So when you’re driving down the street at 30 mph, trying to first find the tiny flag-style sign on one of the four posts (assuming you can see it from the angle you’re at), then trying to decipher the 2.5-inch-tall white-on-light-green letters is just about impossible.

It makes navigating this city exceedingly annoying and makes me wonder what the city engineers were thinking when they thought sparse use of tiny signs was going to be enough.

Haha…well just makes u appreciate socal and realize that most of the country isn’t socal and sucks. I’ll venture a guess and say that the city engineers did that to keep outsiders like yourself out. Kinda like how in the midwest people give directions like “oh take a left at the Johnson’s residence and keep going straight till you pass the corner where Ole Billy crashed his tractor and take another left at the Sutherland’s dirt road.” or something like that. Well just be glad you’re in the US of A. I’m in Taiwan right now and all the street signs and lines were just drawn so there’d be something there. No one follows em. So since no one follows em they draw em however they want. If you follow the lane on the onramp for the freeway you’d run into the side wall. Some intersections (with streetlights i might add) are so short it won’t fit a car. But that’s that. Too many to tell. Hope you’re having fun up there. Dayo esho’s up there too so many you guys can share stories about dissing Seetle. Take care.

Hah. I sure was headed to Vegas, only to be delayed there for 10 hours on my way to Austin. Apparently I didn’t see you. Hit me up some time if you want to hang out up here.
