I arrived in Seattle today to find sunny weather and a pleasant temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. I was surprised, as this weather is expected more in San Diego than in this stereotypically rainy city.
I moved my small amount of stuff into my new place, which is quaint. I then went downtown to take in some sights and get a general feel for the city. I noticed a certain amount of homeless people–more than San Diego’s downtown, but far less than San Francisco. I would say the homeless population is probably comparable to that of Austin. The one difference I did notice, however, is that here in Seattle the homeless don’t seem to be as forward about begging. Many of them just sit back and watch people pass, without nagging or begging.
Other than that, the downtown area seems nice. The mall has five levels of stores, but it’s rather small compared to, say, Horton Plaza. There are some neat architectural sights in the Seattle downtown area as well, including the convention center.
I bought two more Perl books to get up to speed on some Perl concepts and practices before starting the core of my work at Amazon.com this week. I will post my impressions of the company once I’ve had some time to see it from the inside. First day tomorrow!
