I often repeat myself when I talk about a certain piece of software that is awesome and makes me happy. I’ll share a list of software that meets this criterion and a small explanation for each. I’m not considering web software here — maybe on another list.
- TextMate - By far the best editor I have ever used. Lightyears beyond the competition in ease of use, customizability, performance, and sexiness.
- Mozilla Firefox - Firefox makes me happy because it’s infinitely customizable, mostly standards-compliant, and has many useful extensions.
- FreeBSD - FreeBSD is just awesome for running servers. All of the servers I maintain (save one relic) run FreeBSD. From the Ports collection to services to ipfw, it’s a harmony of goodness.
- Picasa - A slam dunk for picture management. They can only make it better from here.
- FlashFXP - The simplest, best FTP client, period.
- MySQL-Front 2.5 - The only version of this program that I like…and I like it a lot. Too bad it only works with MySQL 3.23 and lower.
- Microsoft Streets & Trips - My cartophilia obviously gives me a large bias here, but it’s an awesome program.

“They can only make it better from here.”
You should know better: nothing’s easier than to make a cool app uncool :]
Side note: Where’s the Preview for comments?
Fair enough. But I sure hope Google doesn’t mess Picasa up.
Comment preview…hrm. Sounds like I need to find a plugin. But first I’ll wait for WP 2.0.
Very nice list, however I’d like to add to your list with a couple of my picks if I may.
SciTE
Terrific text editor with all the syntax colored goodness, tabs, and supports tons of languages.
Filezilla
Small, Fast, and Powerful FTP Client. Reminds me alot of FlashFXP.
