Recent Awesome Things

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Usually I don’t do roundup type posts, but there has been a lot of awesome recently and I felt it was prudent to catalog some of it.

Review Board
A Django-based web app for managing code reviews. I have yet to try it, but it looks awesome. I’m going to see if I can work it into our flow somehow.
Google Maps Street View
Google has outdone itself again with the release of Street View for Google Maps. It’s like A9’s old Block View images, but infinitely better. It allows 360-degree panning, zooming, navigation along the streets (including turning at intersections) within the interface. My head almost exploded from all of the awesome. (NB: I’m a diagnosed cartophile and so may hold biases.)
BarCamp San Diego
The first BarCamp San Diego was this past weekend and apparently it went pretty well. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it, but I’m planning on going next time. Ted did a talk on HTML5 with nifty slides.
Facebook Platform
Facebook released their Platform product to much fanfare, bringing a more customizable experience to Facebook via applications that can be developed and inserted into their site. There are several cool apps, most notably iLike’s, which is awesome in its design, speed and execution.
A Wet Wipe Revolution
Finally someone standing up for the cleaner minority.

    Over 250 StreetView sightings here:

I’m starting to love google street views. You can spy on so many weird stuff there. Here’s one with a UFO on top of a chinatown restaurant. So funny!

UFO Spaceship has an affinity for Chinatown shops

Though Google’s StreetView is endlessly entertaining, I find it quite disturbing in terms of privacy, like you can see here.

I’m down with having the awesomest maps ever, and I’ve spent a lot of time on Google Maps lately, but this may be a bit too far.

I can’t waffle about the privacy issue. If it’s in public, it’s fair game. Period.

Now if contact info and such starts coming out along with photos, that’s a problem. The photos themselves, though, are and hopefully always will be squarely within the public realm.
