Please oppose H.R. 875, H.R. 759, and all other similar legislative proposals.

The latest bill in this vein, H.R. 2749, will be just as injurious to our agricultural economy as the rest. As my representative, I charge you with defeating this legislation on the grounds that increased regulation only hinders the competitive ecosystem and puts a disproportionate burden on smaller farmers.

By introducing more bureaucracy and regulations, the government stifles the natural forces that allow good producers to produce well and poor producers to do the opposite. Government cannot force the hand of every farmer just as surely as it can't force the hand of every good citizen to obey some single code of morality or set of behavior—this is a good thing.

We are a nation of competitive markets, and as such, we accept the inherent risk in things like foods. The way to mitigate this risk is to encourage transparency and testing via non-governmental third parties, not to mire struggling farmers with increased regulation, taxation and otherwise unconstitutional searches.

Alexander Hamilton warned us of those that would proclaim to act “for the good of the people” (Federalist No. 1) and encouraged us to stand fast for our liberty, above the encroachment of government, no matter what the currently alleged benefits may be. I encourage you to do the same.

Sincerely,
Brad Fults
